Rutgers Cancer Institute
Project Challenge: The Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center at Rutgers Cancer Institute, designed by HOK, is New Jersey’s first and only freestanding cancer hospital. The 12-story, 520,000-square-foot facility in New Brunswick brings inpatient and outpatient cancer care, research labs, and patient wellness services under one roof.
The brief called for smart glass in healthcare at its most demanding: balancing patient privacy with clinical visibility across infusion bays, exam rooms, and research labs, while bringing wayfinding and positive distraction to pediatric infusion and oncology spaces.
Our Solution: Skyline Glass integrated SDX2 Smart Glass into patient observation windows and door systems. The glass switches from clear to opaque on demand, giving caregivers privacy without blinds or curtains and keeping the space easier to clean and maintain.
Custom decorative glass throughout the lobby and treatment spaces adds visual interest and a calmer, more welcoming atmosphere, softening the institutional feel that clinical environments often carry.

Result: With 20,000 square feet of decorative glass and 10,000 square feet of SDX2 Smart Glass, the center balances privacy, visibility, and healing throughout the facility. Caregivers keep flexible sight lines with privacy at the flip of a switch, and durable, cleanable decorative glass brings moments of beauty to every stage of the cancer care journey.
